WATCH: Dr. Bissell discusses COVID-19 efforts within New River Health District

Coronavirus

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The director of the New River Health District, Dr. Noelle Bissell, provided an update Monday afternoon about the coronavirus pandemic and vaccination efforts around the New River Valley.

This Zoom briefing comes after the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 4,944 new COVID-19 cases, 198 new hospitalizations, and 95 new virus-related deaths between Friday, Oct. 15 and Monday, Oct. 18.

The VDH says 131 of those new cases, one of those new hospitalizations, and five of those new deaths are from the following localities in the New River Health District:

  • Floyd County: 15 new cases
  • Giles County: 24 new cases and one new death
  • Montgomery County: 42 new cases and four new deaths
  • Pulaski County: 39 new cases and one new hospitalization
  • Radford: 11 new cases

According to Dr. Bissell, the case numbers in each of these localities and among the various age groups are declining, including among school-age children who have yet to be vaccinated as parents and family members get vaccinated.

However, Dr. Bissell says that nothing is guaranteed, as seen with the death of former Secretary of State Colin Powell from coronavirus complications, even though he was fully vaccinated.
