WATCH: Gov. Northam says COVID-19 percent positive in Virginia is now below 5%; responds to kidnapping plot

Coronavirus

UPDATE 2:42 P.M. (WRIC): Dr. Danny Avula, Director of the Richmond City and Henrico County Health Departments, said people who catch the virus are no longer contagious after 10 days.

The VDH reported 160,805 cases of the virus and 3,372 deaths from COVID-19 across the Commonwealth — that is 1,235 new cases and 11 new deaths from the virus in the last 24 hours.

Northam said the state’s percent positivity has been trending downwards to below 5 percent. This is the second day in a row the VDH reported the 7-day testing average at 4.5 percent.

However, he said while the numbers are not increasing people shouldn’t get complacent. He said with the weather cooling down people will not want to gather outside as much. However, the virus spreads more indoors.

“But I know we can stay strong and continue to get through this in the winter,” he said.

He also discussed how the state’s technology provider is experiencing outages Tuesday due to a Verizon fiber cable being cut during a roadside utility project in Chester, Virginia. Because of this outage, state agency websites like Virginia’s online voter registration are not working.

Northam says he does not appear to have the authority to extend the voter registration deadline, according to state code, and this would come from the courts. However, he expressed support for a court order to extend the deadline.

ORIGINAL POST:
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC/WFXR) — Gov. Ralph Northam will give an update on the coronavirus outbreak in Virginia Tuesday afternoon.

This will be the governor’s first press conference since it was revealed that the same group who conspired to kidnap Michigan Governor Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also discussed kidnapping Northam.

Like Whitmer, Northam has faced criticism for shutting down businesses earlier this year to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

House Republican Leader Todd Gilbert has also been critical of Northam’s approach to the coronavirus pandemic. He issued a statement on Tuesday, Oct. 13, condemning the discussed kidnapping of Northam.

“We’re glad to know that these idiots were picked up by law enforcement before they could hurt anyone,” Gilbert said.

The Virginia Department of Health’s (VDH) website is down Tuesday due to widespread outages impacting multiple state agencies, so there are no new coronavirus numbers to report at this time.

As of Monday, Oct. 12, VDH reported 159,570 cases of the virus across the Commonwealth — 854 new cases since Sunday, Oct. 11.
