UPDATE 11 a.m.: Lynchburg City Schools Superintendent Dr. Crystal Edwards honored school district staff for their work through the pandemic, saying she’s glad that 150 of them are receiving the vaccine on Friday.
“Today, I am thankful, and I am grateful,” Dr. Edwards said.
Dr. Edwards says she is prioritizing nutrition, transportation, and other public-facing staff members for the vaccination efforts.
About a week ago, Centra Health reported they had 133 coronavirus patients at Lynchburg General Hospital.
“As of this morning, we have about 80 people,” said Dr. Michael Elliott with Centra Health.
However, it is unclear how much of this decrease in patients is due to recoveries versus deaths.
UPDATE 10:47 a.m.: According to Health Director Dr. Kerry Gateley, “as of next week, we will receive 3,050 doses [each week]… obviously, that’s not nearly enough.”
Dr. Gateley says if the health district had the supply, they could vaccinate more than 1,500 people per day.
Meanwhile, Interim City Manager Reid Wodicka announced a partnership for a mass vaccination clinic, saying 150 city employees and 150 school employees will be vaccinated on Friday. In addition, while Wodicka says the City of Lynchburg has secured a location for mass vaccination, he did not disclose additional details about the location.
According to Wodicka, the days and hours of operation for this mass vaccination site will depend on the supply available.
However, Lynchburg firefighters are reportedly receiving the training necessary to administer vaccines.
“This is going to last for many months,” said Wodicka. “We need everyone to exhibit patience.”
