VDH, Walgreens expand partnership to offer rapid antigen testing at 15 Walgreens locations

Coronavirus

(WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and Walgreens have expanded their partnership in order to nearly quadruple the number of Walgreens locations providing Abbott BinaxNOW rapid antigen testing across the Commonwealth.

According to the statement released by the VDH on Thursday, Jan. 14, this arrangement increases the number of Walgreens locations able to operate drive-thru COVID-19 testing from four stores to 15 stores at no cost to the public.

“We are pleased to announce the expansion of this public-private partnership following a successful pilot with four Walgreens locations,” said Dr. Parham Jaberi, VDH Public Health and Preparedness deputy commissioner. “Our continued partnership will help ensure increased access to COVID-19 testing at no cost for some of our communities that lack a fixed testing location or have higher rates of vulnerable populations.”

The VDH encourages the use of these coronavirus tests for individuals who are symptomatic; who have been in close contact with someone diagnosed with the virus; who are at high risk of illness or complications; and who are considered essential employees, including educators, childcare providers, and healthcare providers.

“Walgreens takes pride in offering support to our customers and communities in times of need, and we’re pleased to work in collaboration with Virginia’s health officials on their efforts to broaden access to COVID-19 testing to vulnerable populations,” said Paul Blankenship, Walgreens regional vice president in Virginia.

According to the VDH, Walgreens pharmacy teams will oversee the patient’s self-administration of a COVID-19 test, adding that test results will be processed at the pharmacy and provided to patients within 24 hours.

However, health officials say COVID-19 testing will only be available by appointment to those age 3 and older who meet certain screening criteria. In order to set up an appointment, follow this link for the instructions.
