VDH: Total COVID-19 cases rise to 35,749 while deaths reach 1,159 as of Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 799 new COVID-19 cases and 23 new virus-related deaths on Saturday morning, bringing the Commonwealth’s total to 35,749 confirmed and probable cases and 1,159 confirmed and probable deaths.

Health officials confirmed 33,962 cases and 1,123 deaths are related to the virus as of Saturday, May 23. However, 1,787 cases and 36 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

VDH’s Saturday update includes more than 1,000 cases from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

• Alleghany County: 13 cases, 4 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
• Amherst County: 25 cases and 3 hospitalizations
• Appomattox County: 26 cases and 1 hospitalization
• Bedford County: 41 cases, 2 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
• Botetourt County: 31 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 4 deaths
• Buena Vista: 12 cases and 1 hospitalization
• Campbell County: 13 cases, 3 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Carroll County: 66 cases, 3 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Charlotte County: 19 cases and 4 hospitalizations
• Covington: 3 cases
• Craig County: 5 cases
• Danville: 46 cases, 14 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
• Floyd County: 4 cases and 1 hospitalization
• Franklin County: 32 cases, 3 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Galax: 87 cases and 1 hospitalization
• Giles County: 5 cases
• Grayson County: 24 cases and 2 hospitalizations
• Halifax County: 29 cases and 3 hospitalizations
• Henry County: 63 cases, 7 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths
• Highland County: 3 cases
• Lexington: 6 cases
• Lynchburg: 77 cases, 6 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Martinsville: 24 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Montgomery County: 69 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Nelson County: 13 cases
• Patrick County: 13 cases
• Pittsylvania County: 28 cases, 11 hospitalizations, and 1 death
• Pulaski County: 10 cases and 2 hospitalizations
• Radford: 4 cases
• Roanoke City: 141 cases, 7 hospitalizations, and 9 deaths
• Roanoke County: 90 cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths
• Rockbridge County: 14 cases
• Salem: 32 cases, 3 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
• Wythe County: 17 cases, 1 hospitalization, and 1 death

Since Friday, May 22, VDH reported the first virus-related death in Martinsville.

Furthermore, according to Nancy Bell with the West Piedmont Health District, health officials identified 10 new cases in the health district on Friday. Those confirmed cases are distributed among the following localities:

• Franklin County: 1 male patient in his 50s
• Henry County: 2 female patients in their 30s and 40s
• Martinsville: 4 female patients and 1 male patient in their teens and 40s
• Patrick County: 1 female patient and 1 male patient in their 60s and 70s

In addition, health officials say they have received 4,181 records of confirmed and probable hospitalizations across Virginia related to the coronavirus.
