RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — On Wednesday, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) announced that the first case of the SARS-CoV-2 variant has been identified in an adult resident of central Virginia.

The VDH says this case involves someone who has no history of travel during the exposure period.

The variant was first identified in the United Kingdom late last year. Since then, it has been identified in 44 other states.

VDH says they expect to see new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus as the disease continues to spread.

Public health officials say they are closely monitoring the emergence of the new strain in the Commonwealth.
