VDH: 539 new COVID-19 cases reported; 10 new virus-related deaths as of Sunday’s report

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) – The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 539 new coronavirus cases and 10 new virus-related deaths as of Sunday, which brings the Commonwealth’s total COVID-19 count up to 666,650 confirmed and probable cases and 10,895 confirmed and probable fatalities.

Virginia health officials confirmed 518,713 cases and 9,178 deaths are related to the virus as of Sunday, May 9. However, 147,937 cases and 1,717 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

According to VDH’s Sunday count, more than 101,000 cases have been reported from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

  • Alleghany County: 1,331 cases, 59 hospitalizations, and 48 deaths
  • Amherst County: 2,918 cases, 122 hospitalizations, and 36 deaths
  • Appomattox County: 1,589 cases, 68 hospitalizations, and 24 deaths
  • Bath County: 270 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths
  • Bedford County: 6,340 cases, 222 hospitalizations, and 99 deaths
  • Bland County: 673 cases, 26 hospitalizations, and 10 deaths
  • Botetourt County: 2,520 cases, 65 hospitalizations, and 36 deaths
  • Buena Vista: 904 cases, 21 hospitalizations, and 20 deaths
  • Campbell County: 4,466 cases, 166 hospitalizations, and 85 deaths
  • Carroll County: 2,644 cases, 209 hospitalizations, and 70 deaths
  • Charlotte County: 857 cases, 54 hospitalizations, and 18 deaths
  • Covington: 600 cases, 29 hospitalizations, and 13 deaths
  • Craig County: 310 cases, 15 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths
  • Danville: 4,379 cases, 281 hospitalizations, and 135 deaths
  • Floyd County: 853 cases, 30 hospitalizations, and 21 deaths
  • Franklin County: 4,030 cases, 177 hospitalizations, and 76 deaths
  • Galax: 1,164 cases (-4), 95 hospitalizations, and 52 deaths
  • Giles County: 1,275 cases, 51 hospitalizations, and 22 deaths
  • Grayson County: 1,463 cases, 93 hospitalizations, and 35 deaths
  • Halifax County: 2,800 cases, 78 hospitalizations, and 77 deaths
  • Henry County: 4,559 cases, 348 hospitalizations, and 122 deaths
  • Highland County: 109 cases, 1 hospitalization, and 1 death
  • Lexington: 1,190 cases, 25 hospitalizations, and 32 deaths
  • Lynchburg: 7,707 cases, 330 hospitalizations, and 147 deaths
  • Martinsville: 1,596 cases, 156 hospitalizations, and 76 deaths
  • *Montgomery County: 9,347 cases, 182 hospitalizations, and 92 deaths
  • Nelson County: 891 cases, 39 hospitalizations, and 12 deaths
  • Patrick County: 1,348 cases, 104 hospitalizations, and 43 deaths
  • Pittsylvania County: 5,528 cases, 240 hospitalizations, and 80 deaths
  • Pulaski County: 2,632 cases, 125 hospitalizations, and 61 deaths
  • Radford: 2,133 cases, 37 hospitalizations, and 18 deaths
  • Roanoke City: 8,433 cases, 246 hospitalizations, and 192 deaths
  • Roanoke County: 8,224 cases, 176 hospitalizations, and 143 deaths
  • Rockbridge County: 1,532 cases (-1), 47 hospitalizations, and 46 deaths
  • Salem: 2,150 cases, 70 hospitalizations, and 47 deaths
  • Wythe County: 2,637 cases, 152 hospitalizations, and 78 deaths

Since Saturday, May 8, the VDH the following rises in cases of at least 10 or more in the following localities: Montgomery County has 13 new cases. All other localities with newly-reported cases have reported under ten new cases for the day.

In addition, of the 10 new virus-related deaths reported on Sunday, the department says one is from Buena Vista, one is from Henry County and one is from Pittsylvania County.

Health officials say they have received 28,897 total records of confirmed and probable virus-related hospitalizations around Virginia as of Sunday, which is 21 more hospitalizations than VDH reported on Saturday.

Of these newly-reported hospitalizations from Sunday, Bath County has one, Carroll County has one, Franklin County has one, Grayson County has two and Lexington has one.

VDH also reported the following revisions, as of Saturday.

Total Cases
  • Galax has four less cases
  • Rockbridge County has one less case
