Total 25,800 coronavirus cases, 891 deaths reported around Virginia as of Tuesday, VDH says

UPDATE 5:35 p.m.: The West Piedmont Health District has announced the latest COVID-19 case in Henry County involving a male in his 70s with, what has been determined to be “possible” known exposure.

The man has been hospitalized and his close contacts have been identified.


RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — Virginia health officials reported a total of 25,800 COVID-19 cases and 891 virus-related deaths as of Tuesday, including 730 new confirmed and probable cases and 41 new confirmed and probable deaths around the Commonwealth.

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) confirmed 24,601 cases and 864 deaths are related to the virus as of Tuesday, May 12. However, 1,199 cases and 27 deaths are still reported as “probable.”

According to VDH’s Tuesday update, more than 700 coronavirus cases are from the following localities in southwest and central Virginia:

  • Alleghany County: 6 cases and 4 hospitalizations
  • Amherst County: 17 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Appomattox County: 22 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Bedford County: 38 cases, 2 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Botetourt County: 30 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 3 deaths
  • Buena Vista: 8 cases
  • Campbell County: 13 cases and 3 hospitalizations
  • Carroll County: 34 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Charlotte County: 11 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Covington: 1 case
  • Craig County: 4 cases
  • Danville: 41 cases, 13 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Floyd County: 3 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Franklin County: 28 cases and 3 hospitalizations
  • Galax: 56 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Giles County: 8 cases
  • Grayson County: 16 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Halifax County: 24 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Henry County: 27 cases, 5 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Highland County: 2 cases
  • Lexington: 5 cases
  • Lynchburg: 70 cases, 6 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Martinsville: 2 cases and 1 hospitalization
  • Montgomery County: 66 cases, 9 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Nelson County: 12 cases
  • Patrick County: 5 cases
  • Pittsylvania County: 17 cases, 8 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Pulaski County: 9 cases and 2 hospitalizations
  • Radford: 3 cases
  • Roanoke City: 108 cases, 7 hospitalizations, and 1 death
  • Roanoke County: 79 cases and 5 hospitalizations
  • Rockbridge County: 9 cases
  • Salem: 32 cases and 4 hospitalizations
  • Wythe County: 14 cases, 1 hospitalization, and 1 death

Nancy Bell — the Population Health Manager and Public Information Officer for the West Piedmont Health District — told WFXR of a second virus-related death in Henry County on Tuesday morning, but that death was not included in VDH’s Tuesday tally.

Health officials say they have received a total of 171,239 test results and 3,395 records of confirmed and probable hospitalizations related to COVID-19 across Virginia as of Tuesday.
