VDH continues push to get Roanoke Valley residents vaccinated, offer boosters to those who are eligible

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – On Friday, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) opened the doors of the Berglund Center for people to come and receive booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine.

Attendees had to qualify under Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines to receive the booster shot on Friday, Oct. 1. Those ages 18 to 64 with underlying health conditions and those 65 or older are eligible to receive the shot, according to CDC guidelines.

The Roanoke City and Alleghany Health Districts administered 1,400 doses to recipients. Communications Officer Christie Wills for the Virginia Department of Health said many people signed up for the event.

“The clinic did fill up,” said Wills. “I think that just indicates the interest that was there to receive booster doses.”

In addition, Wills says that booster shots give an extra measure of protection against COVID-19.

“What we’ve learned from the science is that the first two doses for most people are very effective,” said Wills. “But, we have seen that booster doses can help certain people who are over the age of 65 or who have other health conditions that would merit getting that booster dose.”

Suzie Deans, a Roanoke resident, wanted to get the booster shot so she can keep her community and family safe.

“We have grandchildren and children that we like to spend a lot of time with that don’t live in Roanoke,” said Deans. “We like to travel. We just feel that we are doing our part to keep everything safer by being vaccinated.”

Deans also wants to see more people come out and get vaccinated to help slow the spread of the virus.

“I just wish more people would take advantage of these kinds of events that are offered,” expressed Deans.

The VDH is still offering first and second doses to people who have not received it. They will be hosting another clinic at the Berglund Center on Friday, Oct. 8.
