SALEM, Va. (WFXR) —Effective immediately, the Salem VA Health Care System has opened COVID-19 vaccination scheduling to veterans of all ages and will offer those vaccines at various facilities around southwest Virginia.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced on Wednesday, March 17 that the Salem VA Medical Center will distribute the two-shot Moderna vaccine while the Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Danville, Lynchburg, Staunton, Tazewell, and Wytheville will offer the single-dose Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) vaccine.
“The Salem VA Health Care System is excited to be able to open vaccination appointments for all of our enrolled Veteran population,” said Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, Chief of Pharmacy at the Salem VA Medical Center. “Individuals are encouraged to reach out to their primary care teams or call our vaccination hotline between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday to schedule their appointments.”
In addition, Thompson says veterans who received the first of a two-dose vaccine at a community hospital are required to get their second dose at the same location.
Veterans who have been fully vaccinated at community hospitals are also encouraged to bring their vaccination cards with them to their next VA appointment in order to update their medical records.
Veterans who want to schedule a COVID-19 vaccination appointment are asked to call (540) 982-2463 and select Option 2.
