(WFXR) — Over the past week, health officials say the number of COVID-related hospitalizations in the “near Southwest Virginia” region increased by 40, bringing the total number of confirmed and pending virus patients up from 504 to 544 as of Friday.

This includes patients at Carilion Clinic, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah Health, and the Salem VA Medical Center.

Between Friday, Jan. 14 and Friday, Jan. 21, local health officials reported 36 more confirmed COVID-19 patients and four more patients under investigation while awaiting coronavirus results. However, the number of virus patients in the ICU dropped by eight.

This news comes as the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 17,027 new coronavirus cases and 131 new virus-related hospitalizations on Jan. 21, but one less virus-related death.
