(WFXR) — Since earlier this week, health officials say the number of COVID-related hospitalizations in the region known as ‘Near Southwest Virginia’ decreased by 27, bringing the total number of confirmed and pending virus patients down from 553 to 526 as of Friday.

This includes patients at Carilion Clinic, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah Health, and Salem VA facilities.

Between Wednesday, Jan. 26 and Friday, Jan. 28, number of confirmed coronavirus patients reported by the ‘Near Southwest Virginia’ region decreased by 21, the number of virus patients in the ICU decreased by six, and the number hospitalized patients under investigation for the virus decreased by six.

Until Jan. 28, the reported number of confirmed and pending COVID-19 patients had been steadily climbing since mid-November 2021, according to health officials:
