Number of confirmed, pending COVID-19 patients at ‘near Southwest’ Virginia hospitals jumps from 128 to 191

(WFXR) — As health officials reported Virginia’s highest spikes in months with regard to new coronavirus cases, hospitalizations, and deaths over the past few days, the number of confirmed and pending virus patients around “near Southwest” Virginia has also spiked, going from 128 to 191 since last week.

This includes patients at Carilion Clinic, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah Health, and the Salem VA Medical Center.

Since Friday, Aug. 6, local health officials reported 65 new hospitalized coronavirus patients, as well as 22 new virus patients in the ICU, but two less hospitalized patients awaiting virus results.

Meanwhile, the Virginia Department of Health reported 2,270 new COVID-19 cases, 69 new hospitalizations, and 16 new virus-related deaths around the Commonwealth as of Friday, Aug. 13.

As of Aug. 13, 2021:

  • Hospitalized COVID-19 patients: 178
    • ICU patients: 50
  • Hospitalized PUIs (patients under investigation awaiting results): 13

As of Aug. 6, 2021:

  • Hospitalized COVID-19 patients: 113
    • ICU patients: 28
  • Hospitalized PUIs (patients under investigation awaiting results): 15
