Hospitals and nursing homes in New York are bracing for the possibility that a statewide COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health care workers could lead to staff shortages when it takes effect Monday, Sept. 27, 2021. Doctors and nurses — and also support staff, like food service workers and cleaners — have been given until Sept. 27 to get at least their first vaccine shot in one of the nation’s most aggressive plans to protect patients. (WFXR) — The total number of confirmed and pending COVID-19 patients at “near southwest Virginia” hospitals — including Carilion Clinic, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah Health, and the Salem VA Medical Center — jumped again over the last week, going from 377 to 405 as of Friday.

This news comes the day after southwest Virginia hospital representatives and first responders came together to urge community members to get vaccinated and follow coronavirus protocols in order to slow the spread of the virus and ease the strain on healthcare workers.

Since Friday, Sept. 17, local health officials reported 24 new confirmed COVID-19 patients in these hospitals, along with 10 new virus patients in the ICU and four new patients under investigation for the virus.

Meanwhile, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 2,886 new COVID-19 cases, 85 new hospitalizations, and 48 new virus-related deaths around the Commonwealth as of Friday, Sept. 24.
