(WFXR) — Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — in other words, the hospitals from the “near southwest region” of Virginia — reported a dramatic drop in the number of COVID-19 patients on Wednesday, plummeting from 463 confirmed and pending virus patients to 384 in the course of a week.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities has been generally increasing due to COVID-19.

However, on Wednesday, Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of total hospitalized coronavirus patients from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. Then, by Wednesday, Jan. 27, that total sunk to 345, a decrease of 87 patients.

In addition, hospitals reported on Jan. 27 that the number of ICU patients went down by six and the number of patients on ventilators went down by three since Jan. 20.

However, health officials say the hospitals around Near Southwest Virginia saw a bump in the number of patients awaiting coronavirus test results, going from 31 to 39 between Jan. 20 and Jan. 27.

Meanwhile, as of Jan. 27, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 126 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
