(WFXR) — After several weeks of ups and downs with regard to coronavirus hospitalizations in “near Southwest” Virginia, health officials reported Wednesday a small spike in the total number of confirmed and pending virus patients, going from 119 to 139 since last week.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities — more specifically, Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — had been generally increasing from late October 2020 to mid-January 2021 due to COVID-19.

Then, on Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. That total number of patients continued to steadily drop every week for 10 weeks.

However, on March 31, hospitals reported 120 confirmed COVID-19 patients, which was four more patients than the week before. By April 7, that number increased by 10 to reach 130. By April 14, though, that number decreased by six, reaching 124.

Then, on April 21, health officials announced the number of confirmed virus patients jumped by 19 to 143. On April 28, though, that number went down by 36, dropping to 107 patients.

As of Wednesday, May 5, however, confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations at these hospitals jumped by 12 to 119.

In addition, the number of ICU virus patients increased by nine, the number of ventilator virus patients increased by one, and the number of patients under investigation for the virus increased by eight over the course of the last week, health officials say.

Meanwhile, as of May 5, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 52 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
