‘Near Southwest’ Virginia hospitals see first increase in total number of confirmed, pending COVID-19 patients since mid-January

Coronavirus

(WFXR) — After 10 straight weeks of declining coronavirus hospitalizations, the hospitals around “near Southwest” Virginia reported their first increase in the total number of confirmed and pending virus patients on Wednesday, going from 116 to 123 over the course of the week.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities — more specifically, Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — had been generally increasing from late October 2020 to mid-January 2021 due to COVID-19.

Then, on Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. That total number of patients has continued to steadily drop every week since then.

However, as of Wednesday, March 31, hospitals are reporting 120 confirmed COVID-19 patients, which is four more patients than the week before.

The number of confirmed virus patients in the ICU also increased by six and the number of virus patients on a ventilator increased by one over the course of the week.

In addition, local hospitals reported three new hospitalized patients awaiting coronavirus results on March 31. This comes one week after health officials reported zero patients with pending results for the first time since hospitals started sharing the data in late October 2020.

Meanwhile, as of March 31, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 88 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
