(WFXR) — After two weeks of small increases in the total number of confirmed and pending COVID-19 patients at “near Southwest” Virginia hospitals, health officials announced Wednesday that number dipped from 134 to 131 over the course of the week.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities — more specifically, Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — had been generally increasing from late October 2020 to mid-January 2021 due to COVID-19.

Then, on Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. That total number of patients continued to steadily drop every week for 10 weeks.

However, on March 31, hospitals reported 120 confirmed COVID-19 patients, which was four more patients than the week before. Then, by April 7, that number increased by 10 to reach 130.

By Wednesday, April 14, though, the number of confirmed virus patients decreased by six, reaching 124. Health officials also reported one less coronavirus patient on a ventilator on April 14.

On the other hand, the number of hospitalized patients under investigation increased by three while the number of virus patients in the ICU increased by one since April 7, according to the hospitals.

Meanwhile, as of April 14, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 81 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
