(WFXR) — Health officials in “near Southwest” Virginia reported the third week in a row of declining coronavirus hospitalizations, bringing the total number of confirmed and pending COVID-19 patients from 97 to 90 as of Wednesday.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities — more specifically, Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — had been generally increasing from late October 2020 to mid-January 2021 due to COVID-19.

Then, on Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. That total number of patients continued to steadily drop every week for 10 weeks.

However, on March 31, hospitals reported 120 confirmed COVID-19 patients, which was four more patients than the week before. By April 7, that number increased by 10 to reach 130.

Over the next few weeks, the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations went downupdown, and up, reaching 119 as of May 5.

Then, on May 12, the hospitals reported a drop to 98 confirmed virus patients, which is 21 less patients than the week before. By May 19, the number decreased again, going down by 19 to reach 79.

As of Wednesday, May 26, health officials say the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients is down to 69, which is 10 less than last week.

In addition, the number of ventilator patients with COVID-19 dipped by nine and the number of virus patients on ventilators dipped by seven over the course of the last week, according to Wednesday’s report.

However, the number hospitalized patients under investigation for the virus increase by three since May 19.

Meanwhile, as of May 26, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 57 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
