(WFXR) —Hospitals from Virginia’s “Near Southwest” region — including Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — reported 432 confirmed COVID-19 patients and 31 pending virus patients as of Wednesday, marking the first decrease in the total number of coronavirus hospitalizations in more than two months.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities has been generally increasing due to COVID-19.

However, for the first time since early November, health officials reported a drop in the number of total hospitalized coronavirus patients in the past week.

More specifically, the number of confirmed COVID-19 patients dropped by 18 between Wednesday, Jan. 13 and Wednesday, Jan 20. The number of ICU patients also decreased by five over the course of the week.

Hospitals around southwest Virginia only saw a tiny bump in the number of their other coronavirus patients, with two more patients on ventilators and one more patient awaiting coronavirus test results on Jan. 20 than on Jan. 13.

Meanwhile, as of Jan. 20, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 165 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
