BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — During Thursday night’s meeting, the Bedford County School Board voted to make masks optional for students, effective Feb. 1.

On Thursday, Jan. 13, members of the school board passed a motion 5-2 that states, “based on the determination of the school board that the universal masking of students is not practicable.”

The motion also says masks will be optional for students on school grounds, as well as school-sponsored extracurricular activities.

Included in the discussion regarding the motion was the number of students removed from the district since the implementation of the universal masking policy. Instruction time lost by teachers when reminding students to wear their masks was also part of the discussion.

Students will still be required to wear a face covering on school buses.
