LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Lynchburg’s City Council is holding a public hearing on Tuesday on a resolution to disperse funds received through the cares act to help with the coronavirus pandemic.
About $420,000 were allocated to the city in the form of Community Development Block Grants.
The city is proposing giving more than half of those funds to housing and utility assistance programs.
This comes after the General District Court resumed eviction hearings.
We spoke with Aaron Boone, Lynchburg’s Public Defender, who said that going through an eviction now is, “Particularly harsh.”
“Social distancing and the closure of many apartment complexes,” said Boone, “the management in those complexes, that would certainly make it hard for someone to find new housing.”
The proposal includes funding for Miriam’s House and Lynchburg Community Action Group to provide short-term rental assistance as well as other supportive services throughout the city.
