(WFXR) — In Wednesday’s weekly update, hospitals from “near Southwest” Virginia — including Carilion, Centra, LewisGale, Sovah, and Salem VA facilities — saw their 10th consecutive decline in the total number of confirmed and pending COVID-19 hospitalizations, going from 144 patients to 116. However, for the first time since local hospitals starting reporting this data, there were no patients with pending coronavirus results.

In a week-to-week comparison, the number of hospitalizations at these facilities had been generally increasing from late October 2020 to mid-January 2021 due to COVID-19.

However, on Jan. 20, health officials reported a drop in the number of confirmed coronavirus hospitalizations from 450 to 432 for the first time since early November. That total number of patients has continued to steadily drop every week since then.

Now, as of Wednesday, March 24, hospitals are reporting 116 confirmed COVID-19 patients, which is 21 less patients than the week before.

In addition, over the course of the week, health officials reported seven less hospitalized patients awaiting coronavirus results, bringing the number of hospitalized PUI’s down to zero for the first time since hospitals started sharing the data in late October 2020.

Despite the decrease in the total number of confirmed virus patients, the number of virus patients in the ICU increased by seven for the first time since mid-February while the number of virus patients on a ventilator increased by two.

Meanwhile, as of March 24, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported 89 new virus-related hospitalizations around the Commonwealth.
