Centra Health sees drop in COVID-19 patients, rise in virus-related deaths

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — During Wednesday morning’s briefing, Centra Health reported a decrease in the number of hospitalized coronavirus patients, but an increase in the number of virus-related deaths at Lynchburg General Hospital.

As of Wednesday, Jan. 20, Lynchburg General Hospital has dipped below 100 coronavirus patients after record high of nearly 140.

“My fear is we weathered Thanksgiving, but we haven’t seen Christmas and New Years yet,” said Andy Mueller.

Lynchburg General reported 92 patients within the hospital — 20 of whom are in the ICU and 14 of whom are on ventilators — are positive for the virus as of Wednesday morning.

This number is a noteworthy drop from the peak of 133 coronavirus patients reported one week earlier.

“With those lower numbers also come COVID deaths,” said Dr. Chris Lewis.

Lynchburg General has seen 225 virus-related deaths so far, 10 of which have occurred just since Monday, Jan. 18. This number is up from the 183 total deaths reported on Jan. 7.

In addition, Centra has administered approximately 9,010 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine so far as health officials prepare to start vaccinating members of group 1b, such as firefighters, police officers, teachers, grocery store workers, people over 65 etc.
