Centra Health reports 95 total COVID-19 patients at hospitals as of Wednesday

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Officials from Centra Health shared a variety of new information on Wednesday, including the number of COVID-19 patients at their hospitals in central and Southside Virginia, as well as effective ways to determine your best option for medical care based on your symptoms.

Centra is reporting a total of 95 coronavirus inpatients at the following two hospitals as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1:

  • Lynchburg General Hospital:
    • 84 total COVID-19 patients
      • 16 patients in the ICU, with nine on ventilators
      • 68 unvaccinated patients and 16 fully vaccinated patients
  • Southside Community Hospital:
    • 11 total COVID-19 patients
      • No patients in the ICU
      • Eight unvaccinated patients, two partially vaccinated patients, and one fully vaccinated patient

In order to make it easier for community members to be aware of the coronavirus cases in the central and Southside Virginia communities, Centra will now provide these virus hospitalization numbers on their website.

Meanwhile, Centra says that the Versatile Acuity Unit (the COVID Unit), as well as the pulmonary, oncology, surgical, and pediatrics units are all dedicated to treating coronavirus patients.

Health officials say they are continuing to review elective procedures on a daily basis and evaluating them as needed, postponing some surgeries when the hospitals have particularly high inpatient needs. However, staffing and space for patients continue to limit the hospitals’ capabilities.

“We are seeing an increase in our visits to our Urgent Care locations. We typically see an uptick in visits during our fall and winter months, but the local increase in COVID cases is driving up our volumes currently,” Centra said in a statement on Wednesday. “We understand that wait times are extremely high and are doing our best to see patients as quickly as possible.”

Centra shared the following graphics with information about the best place to go to receive medical care based on your symptoms:
