Centra Health provides COVID-19 response update


(WFXR) – Centra is continuing to monitor COVID-19 indicators at its facilities, communities and the region and pledges to react accordingly to sudden spikes in cases.

In the latest update, provided by Centra Health on Monday, overall hospitalizations remain stable.

As of Monday morning, Oct. 5, Centra’s current census is:

  • 14 patients in Pulmonary
  • Six patients in ICU (2 on ventilators)
  • Three patients with pending results at Southside Community Hospital
  • To date, 78 deaths associated with COVID across the system

Centra Health notes that it is currently experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19 positive cases in its Acute Rehab facility at Virginia Baptist Hospital (an outbreak is defined as anything over two cases).

  • Eight patients have tested positive with six tests pending
  • The first patient transferred to the Lynchburg General COVID unit when the test returned positive. Seven patients testing positive are currently being cared for at Virginia Baptist in the Acute Rehab Unit.
  • All patients remain stable, with mild symptoms
  • Employees are being tested, with results pending
  • A portion of the Acute Rehab unit is being transitioned to a dedicated COVID unit at Virginia Baptist Hospital
  • All families have been informed and will continue to be updated on their loved one’s condition
  • Virginia Health Department has been informed
  • The unit is not currently accepting admissions at this time.

Centra Guggenheimer Health and Rehab is also experiencing an outbreak of COVID positive cases.

  • Three patients and two caregivers have tested positive
  • All residents remain stable and being cared for at Guggenheimer
  • Long-term care facilities require routine testing in accordance with CMS
  • All families have been informed and will continue to be updated on their loved one’s condition
  • Virginia Department of Health has been informed.
