CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Numerous New River Valley law enforcement agencies have shared their support on social media after a Carroll County deputy who spent weeks fighting the coronavirus died early Thursday morning.

According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, Cpl. Charles “Charlie” Catron passed away on Thursday, Sept. 23. However, Catron had reportedly been battling the virus since late August.

Officials say Catron started his career in law enforcement at the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office in 2008, serving his community in the patrol division, court division, and civil division.

The corporal is survived by his mother, girlfriend, daughter, and grandchildren.

Sheriff Kevin Kemp urges members of the Carroll County community to keep Catron’s family and his colleagues at the sheriff’s office in your thoughts and prayers.

Meanwhile, a number of sheriff’s offices and police departments — and even some fire departments — posted messages of sympathy and support on Facebook Thursday:
