BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Lord Botetourt High School students and families are asked to self-monitor for COVID-19 symptoms after school officials announced Monday a student tested positive for the virus.

According to the letter sent to members of the Lord Botetourt High School community on Monday, Sept. 14, there were limited areas of potential exposure — none of which were classroom areas — and the school will stay open at this time.

The school district says the areas impacted by the potential exposure were cleaned per protocol, which also involves using EPA-registered disinfectants.

According to school officials, they are working alongside the Roanoke and Alleghany Health Department to identify any close contacts of the student in question in order to determine whether they might have been exposed to the virus. The health department will directly contact the parent of any potentially exposed child to offer guidelines on necessary actions, the school district says.

If you are contacted by the health department and your child needs to stay home temporarily, you are asked to contact the school so your child can have the opportunities to continue learning during that absence from school.

However, if you are not contacted by health officials, there is no need to stay home or avoid activities at this time, school officials say.

Parents are asked to monitor their children — especially if they have underlying medical conditions — and the rest of their family for coronavirus symptoms. In addition, family members are encouraged to promote healthy behavior and other practices shared by health officials amid the pandemic, such as hand washing and facial coverings.
