GALAX, Va. (WFXR) — A Galax man couldn’t believe his luck when he scratched a $1 million winning ticket in the Virginia Lottery’s $31,000,000 Payout game.
“I was speechless,” Brad Lundy said. “I didn’t think it was real!”
Lundy bought his winning ticket at a Kangaroo Express in Galax, which will receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket, according a news release on Monday, June 8.
Rather than taking the full $1 million prize over the course of 30 years, Lundy reportedly chose to receive $675,982 in cash at one time before taxes. Lundy told lottery officials he hopes to buy a house with his winnings.
The $31,000,000 Payout game is one of dozens of Scratchers available from the Virginia Lottery, offering a total of $31 million in prize money ranging from $10 up to $1 million. According to Monday’s statement, Lundy’s ticket is the first top prize winner claimed, which means three more $1 million prizes are still out there waiting to be claimed.
Lottery officials say the chances of winning the top prize in the $31,000,000 Payout game are 1 in 1,101,600, but the chances of winning any prize are 1 in 3.52.
The Virginia Lottery generates more than $1.7 million per day for Virginia’s K-12 public schools and helps provide low-interest loans to localities for public school construction, renovations and technology upgrades, officials say.
