Deployed military dad surprises Franklin County student with virtual visit from overseas

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — For a child, spending day after day while your parent is thousands of miles away is tough, but on Wednesday, one Franklin County boy found his deployed dad waiting for him at school…virtually, that is.

On Wednesday, April 21, Henry Elementary School surprised a student with a virtual visit from his father, Sgt. Sims, who is serving in Kuwait with the U.S. Army, according to Franklin County Public Schools.

Since the boys classmates have been discussing the military and Kuwait, school officials say they had a lot of questions to ask the sergeant.

“Thank you to the Sims family for your service!” Franklin County Public Schools wrote on social media.

However, this virtual visit was not the only show of support for military kids within the school district that day.

“Today is Purple Up Day! Our schools are recognizing and honoring the service of Virginia’s youngest heroes today!” Franklin County Public Schools posted on Facebook Wednesday morning. “Virginia has over 80,000 military-connected children. We are supporting our students by wearing PURPLE.”
