CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — The Town of Christiansburg is kicking off the holiday season with several weeks full of fun — albeit modified for the sake of safety amid the pandemic — festivities, including a virtual tree lighting, Santa Claus, a parade, and more.
Here is a list of the holiday events scheduled to take place over the next few weeks in Christiansburg:
Virtual Tree Lighting
You can watch a live stream of the Christiansburg tree lighting at dusk on Wednesday, Dec. 2, by following this link for the Town of Christiansburg Facebook page.
Calls from the North Pole
The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department has been in contact with the North Pole and Santa has agreed to personally call children 8 years and younger on Wednesday, Dec. 2, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Santa is busy this time of year and may need more time to call all the children. If you do not receive a call on Wednesday, you will be called on Friday, Dec. 4.
Virtual Christmas at the Market
From Thursday, Dec. 3, through Thursday, Dec. 10, you can shop from Christiansburg vendors online by clicking this link.
Santa’s Coming to Town
In the words of Christiansburg officials, “Santa’s sleigh is in the shop, getting fixed up before his big night. In the meantime, he’s borrowing one of Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department’s trucks to visit our town!”
From Monday, Dec. 7, through Thursday, Dec. 10, as well as on Saturday, Dec. 12, Santa Claus is set to cruise through Christiansburg at 6:30 p.m., periodically sounding his siren so you know when he’s on the way.
If there is inclement weather on any of these days, the event will be canceled and an announcement will be posted here.
Unlike last year, Ol’ Saint Nick won’t make any stops, but he will drive through neighborhoods slowly enough for you to check out his decorated fire truck and give him a wave from your doorstep or yard while he passes through.
You can check out a map of Santa’s route by clicking here.
Reverse Christmas Parade at Uptown Christiansburg
Rather than the town’s traditional Christmas parade, Christiansburg will hold a reverse parade — with the theme of “Light up the tree, it’s Christmas you see” — at the former NRV Mall from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11.
Floats will parked in the New River Community College section of the Uptown Christiansburg parking lot while the spectators drive by along New River Road. Follow this link to check out the layout of the event.
In case of inclement weather, officials will announce on this website by noon on Dec. 11 that the parade will be rescheduled to Monday, Dec. 14.
Light Up Your Home for the Holidays
The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department is holding a residential holiday decorating contest. Officials say a staff member will visit each location to decide on the top 10 entries, which will then be posted on the Town of Christiansburg Facebook page for the community to place their votes between Friday, Dec. 18, and Monday, Dec. 21.
If you are interested in registering for this contest, you are asked to complete this form by noon on Wednesday, Dec. 16.
Community members can also do their own self-guided tour of the contestants’ decorated homes using this map, which will be updated as applications are submitted.
