LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley stopped by Liberty University on Friday as part of her book tour, making her the second Republican this week to come to Liberty to promote a new book.
Donald Trump, Jr. spoke there on Wednesday.
Haley’s appearance was very different from Donald Trump, Jr.’s. While Trump spent much of his time attacking political opponents, Haley stressed the importance of respecting people you disagree with.
It was a lesson former Haley wanted students to learn.
She shared the story of how then-candidate Donald Trump attacked her after she endorsed Marco Rubio in the 2016 primary.
“The president then tweeted ‘Nikki Haley is an embarrassment to South Carolina,'” said Haley, “and I responded in a tweet that said, ‘Bless your heart.'”
It was sarcastic, but she was later offered the UN Ambassador position by then-Chief of Staff Reince Priebus.
“I said, ‘Reince, I don’t even know what the United Nations does. I just know everybody hates it.'”
Students were impressed by her approach.
“We have this idea of cancel culture that a lot of people give in to,” said freshman Evan Beshel, “and I don’t think that’s the best that we can do, so I think she did a great job of answering back with respect even if you are not seeing eye to eye.”
She discussed her claims in the book that then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Chief of Staff John Kelly tried to recruit her to undermine the president and “save the country.”
“It’s not that they thought the president was unfit or rogue,” she said. “They disagreed with him on policy.”
“She pretty much said that the president is the one who sets policy,” said senior Calum Best, “and to follow the Constitution, I need to be loyal to him, even if I disagree with him, and that was a very fair assessment, I think.”
The impeachment hearings did briefly come up when Liberty University President mentioned former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch, who was testifying at the same time as their conversation, but Haley did not comment on the hearings.
Ambassador Haley did not take any questions from the press.
