ROANOKE, Va (WFXR) — Each Friday on “Good Day Virginia” is Foodie Friday. We highlight restaurants, chefs, and more throughout southwest Virginia.
WFXR News’ Hazelmarie Anderson spoke with Cassie Hunt, a Community School parent volunteer to talk about the interesting strawberry delights that will be featured at this year’s festival.
As the countdown for Roanoke’s 43rd Annual Strawberry Festival begins, Hunt shares this festival is one of the biggest fundraisers for the Community School. It helps provide resources for their operating budget and helps with extracurricular activities.
“I look forward to this festival all year long,” said Hunt. “We’ve got parents and alumni and students and teachers all in the food booth and dipping chocolate strawberries and selling tickets. We’ve got live music it’s just the best weekend to build our community.”
One thing the community anticipates is a slice of homemade strawberry shortcake!
Strawberries are known as the heart fruit, but for Roanoke, it’s what brings the community together. The Community Schools strawberry shortcake is constructed with homemade shortcakes made by volunteers, which are then topped with a scoop of Homestead Creamery Ice Cream with freshly cut strawberries. To top it all off is a swirl of whip cream.
