BLACKSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — Each Friday on “Good Day Virginia” is Foodie Friday; we highlight restaurants, chefs, and more throughout southwest Virginia.
WFXR News’ Hazelmarie Anderson spoke with the owner of Halwa Bakery & Cafe, Karmen George, about the importance of sharing her Mediterranean culture with the community through food.
“I want people to experience everything I grew up eating. Everything is different in a Mediterranean way. We use different ingredients. We use different flavors. So, that’s why I want people to experience everything,” said George.
From fresh coffee to sweet puff pastries, George gave Anderson a peak into her culture through her love for food. Anderson joined her in the kitchen to make a few of the cafe’s popular dishes, including chocolate cake and baklava.
The cafe has been in Blacksburg for three years. George says “halwa” has two meanings in Arabic, “dessert” and “beautiful,” and that’s what her cafe is all about.
Halwa Bakery & Cafe is located at 700 North Main Street in Blacksburg. For more information about the cafe, visit their Facebook page here.
