Firework laws for the Fourth of July holiday weekend

Anyone planning on purchasing fireworks for Fourth of July celebrations should be aware of firework laws.

Roanoke City fire officials say most fireworks in the city are legal. However, illegal fireworks manage to be set off every year.

Illegal fireworks are those that explode or shoot into the air.

The Roanoke Police Department’s biggest concern over the holiday weekend are people firing off illegal fireworks or firearms in the city.

Shooting into the sky is a large safety concern because what goes up must come down and the police department doesn’t want stray bullets injuring people as they try to celebrate this important holiday.

“We get a lot of calls for service during the Fourth of July holiday,” Roanoke Police Department Sergeant Christopher Ramey says, “People mistake fireworks for gunshots but we would rather be safe than sorry and investigate all calls for service. So if you hear something you believe to be a firearm, please call the police so we can respond out.”

If you have any questions about using any fireworks, look up the state code and the code for your area on fire prevention.
