ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – This year marks the 19th annual Fashions for Evergreens at the Hotel Roanoke.
The event is open to the public and will feature 39 trees, which makes it the largest in its history.
Over the past few days, those decorating trees have been working diligently to make their hand-picked themes and visions come to fruition. Many of the participants plan for the display up to a year, or even two years in advance.
We started in August with the planning. We usually sit down and come up with a couple of different themes and kind of narrow it down to one. We always try to focus it back towards the kids, and fostering, and just giving kids hope, and a new home.Gabrielle Liegey, First Home Care
Many see the annual event as an outreach opportunity, to pay tribute, or to share valued sentiments.
It started as just a way to get into the season, and for people to come celebrate at the hotel. It was our way to invite the public in to just share the season with us.Michael Quonce, Public Relations Manager- The Hotel Roanoke
Public Relations Manager for the Hotel Roanoke, Michael Quonce explained that although the event is in its 19th year and started as a way to spread holiday cheer, 8 years ago they used the exhibit to give back in a big way.
When people started voting before it turned into a monetary donation system there was a stuffing of the vote, so we figured if people were going to stuff the vote, what better way to do it than to pick a charity and have people vote with money.Michael Quonce, Public Relations Manager- The Hotel Roanoke
Attendees can vote with as little as a penny, and make an impact. All the funds produced from votes go directly to the United Way of Roanoke. In the 8 years that the hotel has implemented this voting system, it has been able to raise $43,000 to the organization.
WFXR is a proud participant in Fashions for Evergreens. The WFXR tree is decorated in honor of our first responders.
