Roanoke, Va. (WFXR) — The Build Smart Institute in Roanoke has an incredible opportunity for tenth through twelfth-grade students in Bedford County. They’re giving twenty scholarships through the Bedford Cares Act grant and are looking to fill these spots by December 15th.

“The Core Fundamentals of Construction is an $1800 value that they’re getting free. This is a 90-hour course, it’s done three days a week. It’s an opportunity for them to learn to frame, to learn running pipe for plumbing, to learn running electrical wiring, they get to work with jackhammers, lay block, lay brick, there’s nowhere else they can get an experience like this and they have an opportunity for free if they live in Bedford County.”

Alicia Smith, President of the Build Smart Institute

The Build Smart Institute team considers The Core Fundamentals Course to be a higher education course.

“They actually get a set of employable skills that’s equal or as compared to other higher education, so they don’t have any student debt, and they come out of here and they’re able to be employed tomorrow, through the skill sets that we train them to do.”

Rob Leonard, Director of Build Smart Institute

President of the Build Smart Institute, Alicia Smith says it’s as simple as calling and adding your name to a list and can change the trajectory of one’s life.

“Some people are going to be the ones that are actually on the field, building and constructing the products, others are going to be involved in the research and development, they’re going to be involved in manufacturing, they’re going to be involved in products and sales. We wanted them to be able to experience all facets of construction.”
