Roanoke County Schools announce additional early dismissal days added to the calendar through December

ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Roanoke County School Board has announced and approved a proposal to add several early dismissal days to the school calendar for the months of October, November, and December.

Roanoke County Public Schools says this will allow teachers time for planning for differentiated learning and remediation, contacting parents, working with individual students and offsetting time spent covering for other teachers due to a significant shortage of substitute teachers.

Starting on Friday, Oct. 15, the district says there will be one early dismissal day or a closed day each week on the following days:

  • Friday, Oct. 15: School closed (teacher workday from home)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 20: Two hour early dismissal (originally was a three-hour dismissal)
  • Wednesday, Oct. 27: Two hour early dismissal
  • Tuesday, Nov. 2: Schools closed for Election Day
  • Wednesday, Nov. 10: Two hour early dismissal
  • Wednesday, Nov. 17: Two hour early dismissal
  • Wednesday, Nov. 24 through Friday, Nov. 26: School closed for Thanksgiving (originally Nov. 24 was a three-hour early dismissal day)
  • Wednesday, Dec. 1: Two hour early dismissal
  • Wednesday, Dec. 8: Two hour early dismissal

“We have talked with many of our teachers and principals over the last few weeks and know that everyone is working incredibly hard to meet the needs of our students.”

Dr. Ken Nicely, Superintendent of Roanoke County Public Schools

During the meeting, the school board also approved an increase in the daily pay rate for substitute teachers and instructional assistants.

  • Substitutes with a college degree will receive $140 per day (up from $100)
  • Substitutes without a college degree will receive $125 per day (up from $85)
  • Instructional assistants will receive $110 per day (up from $76-$85)
