UPDATE 4:45 p.m.: Police at Radford University have confirmed that a shooting took place near Muse Hall Tuesday afternoon and a student was taken into custody.
The Radford University Police Department says a deputy with the Radford City Sheriff’s Office was in the area at 1:54 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20; saw the incident; and began following the fleeing individual.
At 1:56 p.m., the department says the person — identified later as a Radford University student — was placed into custody as both university and city police officers arrived.
Once the individual was placed in custody, police determined there was no other threat to public safety and determined this to be an isolated incident.
According to officials, information obtained by responding officers early on indicated the incident resulted from a fight between people who knew each other.
The suspect — who has not yet been named — has been placed on interim suspension and remains in custody with pending charges, police say.
If you have any information about this incident, you are asked to contact Sgt. Chris Moore at (540) 831-5500.
