ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — Many families are preparing for summer vacations and looking to save money however possible. Financial experts say some credit cards can help.

Nathan Grant, a senior financial industry analyst for MoneyTips, said, “The main reason people usually want to get a travel credit card is for a good rewards program.”

Many credit card rewards programs allow users to earn points or miles that can be redeemed for things like airline tickets, hotel stays, and even cash back. However, Nathan Grant says there are some additional things cardholders should look for.

He said, “I think primarily you should look for things like travel insurance coverage. So this could be things like trip cancellation insurance in case you have to cover the cost of canceling the trip outright. Or even trip delay or interruption insurance, which can cover things like toiletries, clothing, and other essentials.”

Grant shared you should also use a credit card that offers insurance for baggage delays or loss, as well as rental car insurance. Some cards even offer bonus benefits like complimentary lounge access at airports, expedited boarding, and TSA pre-check. These are all things that normally require a fee.

Grant added, “I think the least known, but also least common perk that people should keep an eye out for that a lot of premium credit cards offer, is a personal dedicated travel concierge service. They can actually personally assist you with planning, booking flights or rental cars, making reservations, or even just providing recommendations for things during your trip.”

If you travel internationally, Grant suggests using a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, which could range between 2% and 3% per transaction.
