DANVILLE, Va. (WFXR) – A man has been arrested in connection with the murder of Xavier N. Carson, 19, of Danville.
Traquon L. Allen, 18, is charged with 2nd Degree Murder and Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony.
Traquon is currently in the custody of North Carolina authorities pending extradition back to Virginia.
“We have found out that they were acquainted,” said Major Timothy Jones with the Danville Police Department. “They did know each other, so it was not an isolated incident. The suspect, once he was identified, we were able to make charges.”
This investigation is ongoing.
Neither Carson nor Allen lived in Cardinal Village, where the shooting took place, but Carla Taylor Harrison, the property manager of Cardinal Village Apartments, said she recognized Carson.
“The young man that’s deceased, I’m familiar with his face in the neighborhood, with some of the other young people in the neighborhood.”
Jean Jackson is the president of Mothers Stronger Together, a group of mothers who lost children to gun violence. She joined the walk with the Danville Police Department.
“It doesn’t get easier. Each time a child dies, it hurts,” she said.
She lost a son, grandson, and nephew to gun violence, and while she did not know Carson, she takes his death personally.
“I’m full of tears right now, I really am, and I didn’t even know the young man, but my heart goes out to his family.”
Danville police visited Cardinal Village on Wednesday to knock on residents’ doors and offer comfort.
“Sad, very tragic loss of life, and clearly this time of year, makes it even worse, coming up on the holiday season,” said Major Chris Wiles, who spoke with residents who knew Carson, “but in our conversations with them, they appreciated our efforts.”
For Jackson, the HEART Walk, which stands for Heal and Engage After Recent Trauma, is a much-needed service to address gun violence.
“The officers are making a big difference,” said Jackson, “and I’m not just saying this. They’re making a big difference in our community and among our kids, and I love it.”
