Danville City Council approves tax hike

The city council has approved a $290 million budget Wednesday.

Several big changes are being made in the city’s budget.

The meal tax is increasing from 6% to 6.5%.

City employees are getting a 2% increase in pay and more benefits.

These benefits include a paid parental leave policy for both the mother and father as well as those adopting or fostering a child. City employees may also receive paid time off to care for a sick parent.

The budget reduces the retirement age for firefighters and officers from 55 to 50. The budget also decreases the required years of employment from 30 to 25 before they’re eligible for benefits.

In addition, about $22.4 million in city funding for Danville Public Schools is included in the budget.
