CRAIG COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — On September 27th Head Varsity Football coach of Craig County High School, Mark Harrison was preparing for the Rockets game against Twin Valley.
Moments before stepping on the field he noticed his player’s usual game day wardrobe had been altered. He thought, “is it October already?” The game announcer came over the speakers to reveal that the team was wearing pink in honor of Coach Harrison’s wife, Stacey.
Although many know October as Breast Cancer Awareness month, the team did not wait until the turn of the month to show their support for their esteemed coach and his family.
Coach Harrison disclosed to his team that Stacey, his wife, has stage 3 cancer in March. He did not want his team to think that he wasn’t committed in lieu of a few days of absence to be by her side.
Coach Harrison says Stacey is undergoing necessary treatments, and the doctors are hopeful. Although Mrs. Harrison hasn’t been feeling her best, she was present at the game. The Harrison family was taken aback by the gesture of the players and say that the support garnered by the small Craig County community has been such a blessing during a difficult time.
