18-year-old shooting victim saved by Richmond police officers

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Two Richmond police officers acted quickly to save the life of an 18-year-old who had been shot multiple times and left lying on a sidewalk in Creighton Court.

Officer C. McNeil and Officer C. Arendall found the shooting victim laying on the sidewalk at around 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 2200 block of Creighton Road.

“I could see the victim laying right there in the corner and just went to work after that. Natural reflex kicked in,” said Arendall.

McNeil and Arendall recognized that the victim needed immediate medical attention. So they put tourniquets on the victim’s legs to stop him from bleeding out.

“Officer Arendall applied the tourniquet to the right leg and I applied the tourniquet to the left leg to stop the bleeding,” said McNeil.

There was excessive blood. Blood stains can be found on a satellite dish and in the grass at the scene. The officers’ use of the tourniquets got the victim’s attention.

“He let out a big gasp of air and that’s when I realized, hey we have hope here,” said Arendall.

The officers’ quick thinking helped the emergency medical personnel that were on their way.

“Giving us the best opportunity to free up some hands and give this male the best chance of survival,” said Sean Riley, who is a firefighter at the Richmond Fire Department.

The intersection of Creighton Rd. and Walcott Pl. became crowded while authorities were attempting to help the victim. Riley believes the actions of Officer Arendall and Officer McNeil allowed them to help the victim more effectively in the chaos.

The victim was taken to VCU Medical Center where he is in critical condition.
