PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — More court documents have been obtained by WFXR News which show suspect Matthew Bernard’s cell phone may contain a motive in the Pittsylvania County triple murder which has drawn national attention.

Matthew Bernard is accused of murdering his mother, 62-year-old Joan Bernard, 25-year-old Emily Bernard Bivens, and 14-month-old Cullen Bivens on Aug. 27.

A court document says Matthew Bernard was going through a divorce at the time of the murders and posted a menacing message online.

“[Never] underestimate a Bernard,” one post viewed by the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office allegedly read. The post showed Bernard holding a young child. The document noted that a young child, now identified as Cullen Bivens, was among the victims discovered in the home.

Authorities discovered a cell phone believed to be owned by Matthew Bernard which may contain evidence in the investigation.

“[The] information in the phone may contain information identifying a motive for these shootings,” the documents read.

A court document obtained by WFXR News revealed that police believe a motive may be found on suspect Matthew Bernard’s phone.
