Case continued for mother accused of sexually abusing her child

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A trial has been continued to a later date for a mother accused of sexually abusing her recently deceased son.

Kayla Thomas was arrested and charged in connection to the death of her son, Steven Meek.

The 2-year-old infant was killed by “brutal blunt force trauma,” according to an autopsy completed by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Christiansburg police were called to the 400 block of Zinc lane back in January when a caller reported an unresponsive child.

Meek was sent to the hospital where he later died.

Thomas is charged with forcible sodomy by engaging in fellatio against the victim’s will by force, threat, or intimidation, inanimate object penetration of a person less than 13 years of age, as well as possession of child pornography among other charges.

Her boyfriend, McKenzie Hellman, is charged with felony murder, 2 counts of aggravated sexual battery of a child, solicitation of a minor less than 15 years old for sexual purposes, and other charges.

Thomas will return to court for a plea hearing in October. Hellman will be in court in September.
