Boy calls for help; says his father shot his mother in Wythe County, authorities say

UPDATE 6:49 p.m.: The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office says Kelly Tolbert is currently in stable condition.

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office says a woman was airlifted to Roanoke Carilion Hospital after she was allegedly shot by her husband on Saturday.

According to the sheriff’s office, a call came in at 8:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 11 about a domestic situation at 357 Lone Ash Road in Barren Springs. Authorities say a boy — whose age was not disclosed — placed the call, saying that his mother had been shot by his father during a fight.

Wythe County deputies and state troopers arrived on scene to find Kelly Tolbert with a gunshot wound, after which she told authorities her husband had shot her with a shotgun.

The sheriff’s office says 40-year-old Joseph Tolbert was taken into custody and faces charges for aggravated malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon, possession of a schedule I or II drug, and possession of a schedule I or II drug while in possession of a firearm.

Joseph Tolbert is being held at the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond, authorities say.

Kelly Tolbert’s condition is unknown.
