CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – Carroll County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the body of a white female was found on land near the New River Trail Wednesday afternoon.
The body was located inside a barn on private property.
“It makes you nervous. It hits close to home. You don’t think stuff like that happens around here, but apparently, it does. It’s scary. It’s uncomfortable,” says Lucy Brown, a resident of Galax.
Sheriff J.B. Gardner says the manner of death is suspicious and is treating the case as a homicide.
Three hikers came across the body Wednesday afternoon.
“The first door they opened up and they found the body there and they immediately called 911,” says Gardner.
Authorities say the hikers who discovered the body do not appear to be involved and are cooperating with the investigation.
An investigator from the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke was sent out to the scene.
“There’s really no reason that we can think of that there would be a body there. We don’t know why you would dump a body there. That’s what makes it suspicious,” says Gardner.
Agents from Virginia State Police assisted with the investigation. Garder says the body had likely been there for less than a day when it was found. A missing person report was filed for a young woman shortly after the hikers discovered the body.
The body is being sent to Roanoke for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
“That will be up to the medical examiner to determine if that’s the same person or not,” says Gardner.
The discovery of the body is giving some in the area cause for concern.
“It’s scary actually. Especially not knowing who done it. They’re probably still out here somewhere,” says Brown.
The cause of death and the name of the woman found have not yet been released.
