First-Day Jitters: Late school buses cause parents to seek quick, last-minute transportation alternative

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) — A lot of kids hopped on the bus on Wednesday morning for the first day of school. However, in Lynchburg, some could not.

Many parents had to drive their kids to school on Wednesday, Aug. 11 and pick them up because buses were either late or didn’t come at all.

According to Steven Smith, the parent of a second-grader at Sheffield Elementary, “My son was supposed to catch the bus at 8:35. So we got out around 8:20 just to be early because you never know. And around 8:45-ish, the bus still had not arrived. I got nervous thinking maybe the bus isn’t coming, maybe we missed the bus somehow.”

“We stepped out on the bus stop about 7:30 this morning,” said Stephanny Bradley, the mother of a kindergartener and a third-grader at Dearington Elementary. “I ended up loading my kids in the car at about 8:50.”

Bradley says the school has their address and information. She also filled out request forms for her kids to be picked up at their address.

“I was just concerned. If my kids hadn’t gotten picked up, what other kids hadn’t gotten picked up. And once we did arrive at the school, we were late but there were still buses pulling in dropping off children,” Bradley explained

Bradley says because of her work schedule, she can’t drop them off every day.

“With them leaving us hanging it’s having me look more towards a K-12 virtual academy with my children,” said Bradley.

Smith says he doesn’t mind taking his son to school, but he’d like to be notified if he has to.

“I do understand there’s a bus driver shortage and it’s the first day so there’s a lot of stuff to work out, but if it’s an issue, we’ll just take him. but I know that’s not possible for every parent,” said Smith.

WFXR News reached out to Lynchburg City Schools for a response and, while they said they were not available on Wednesday, they did say they are willing to talk about this at some point in the future.
