ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) — While many children have either already gone back to school or have decided to do virtually only, some parents are still debating the plans for the upcoming school year.
Educator Stacy Johnson has taught kids in both Roanoke and Salem, and now she’s turning her attention from the classroom to the computer screen.
“I’ve had about a dozen parents reach out to me,” said Johnson.
Johnson has been tutoring for four years.
“I just decided with all the virtual schooling that the schools had planned maybe I could do virtual tutoring,” said Johnson. “It’s not necessarily ideal, but I would love to be right next to the kids cheering them on and working with them face-to-face.”
While she only tutors for a few hours a day, many parents are looking for an in-person teacher to keep their students on the right track.
“For me, I am not equipped to teach my child,” said Sarah-Jane Jones, a parent. “It’s not that I’m not smart enough to teach my child, it’s just I am not an educated educator.”
This is why Jones came up with a solution with her friend to micro-school her children.
“So, I reached out to the other side [to say] ‘hey, I need someone to help me teach her,'” Jones said.
With hard work, Jones was able to bring her vision to life.
“We did end up classifying it as a private school. We’re not technically homeschooling; it’s technically a private school,” said Jones.
Fourteen kids and two teachers will be attending school in a conference room at a private club.
“A financial contract, as well as a COVID contract that states our family is safe and we’re doing all the things we are supposed to do and address all of the concerns of the parents,” Jones said.
All in hopes for a safe school year.
“Everyone is really hopeful that it’s going to be a really good year for the kids,” said Jones.
